Residents living in the 639 block of Ang Mo Kio 6 Avenue recently had to endure the stench emanating from their empty deck.

He prompted one of them to share photos of a pipe that spills fecal matter on the ground and sewage flowing into a nearby drain.

Signs of trouble first appeared on September 3 when a resident contacted the Ang Mo Kio City Council and said that the water from their toilet could not flow through the trap in their gully.

Although the problem was fixed the same day, the city council learned of “an overflow of fecal matter on the empty deck” the next day, a spokesman told CNA.

The affected area was soon cordoned off and cleaned.

While preliminary checks found a clogged underground pipe, the city council said it is still investigating the exact cause of the pipe blockage.

The waste matter has been temporarily diverted to the manhole to prevent further recurrence, the spokesperson added.

The City Council, along with the Home Improvement Program (HIP) contractor, will continue inspection and remediation work today (September 7).

The HDB block, built in 1979, is currently under HIP, which helps solve common aging floor maintenance problems, such as chipped concrete.
