SINGAPORE – A young man who threw a metal mug at a domestic worker and told her he was “poor” was sentenced to a minimum of six months of reformative training on Tuesday (September 1).

The discussion arose after Ng Jia Sheng, 20, ordered the Filipino Estabillo Soledad Augustin, 41, to turn on the air conditioning in his home.

Ng had previously pleaded guilty to using criminal force against the maid, committing a reckless act that endangered her safety and injured her, as well as using insulting words and causing her alarm. Two other charges of willfully causing harm and criminal intimidation were considered for her sentencing.

Your sentencing will begin on November 20 after you complete your exams. Reform training is a rehabilitation sentencing option that is generally given to people between the ages of 14 and 21, resulting in a criminal record.

Stabillo was hired as a domestic worker by Ng’s family.

On June 7, 2018, Ng and Estabillo argued over an air conditioner in the house. Ng had asked Stabillo to turn on the air conditioning, but the maid replied that it was already on.

Insisting that the air conditioning was not working, Ng demanded that the maid turn it on and set it to a very cold temperature. Irritated by Ng’s order, Estabillo said she would and threw the air conditioning controller on a table.

Enraged by the maid’s response, Ng argued with her and spat in her face. Stabillo spat at Ng in retaliation. Later, Ng told the maid that she was “just a maid, she was poor and had no right to be in Singapore,” according to court documents.

Ng’s father stepped in and separated the two. The fight continued in the kitchen with Ng picking up a metal cup containing some water and throwing it at Stabillo. The mug hit Stabillo’s face below her left eye, making her cry.

He picked up several items, including medicine bottles and a plastic jug, and threw them at Ng, but they did not hit him. Stabillo was then retained by Ng’s brother.

After calming down, Stabillo left the house. He sought the help of a fellow domestic worker who worked in another home to call the police.

It was later discovered that Stabillo had abrasion and swelling on his face, as well as a fractured nasal bone.
