SINGAPORE – He was only 13 and she was nine, but that didn’t stop him from sexually abusing his cousin for three years starting in 2014.
It only ended when the victim feared she might be pregnant and her teacher was alerted.
The offender, now 20, was sentenced Thursday (October 29) to at least one year of reformatory training.
You will be detained in a center and forced to follow a strict regimen that includes standing exercises and counseling. The young man cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the identity of his cousin.
He was waiting to enlist in national service when he pleaded guilty earlier this year to two counts of sexually penetrating a minor and one count of sexual abuse.
During the sentence, fourteen other similar charges related to the girl, who is now 15 years old, were considered.
Assistant District Attorney Chong Kee En told the court that the cousins were close and played together when they were children. Sometimes he also helped the girl with her homework.
The couple were in an apartment in early 2014 when the girl came out of the bathroom naked.
The DPP said: “Although he was not initially excited, the desire to see the victim naked again began to fester in his mind.”
Later that year, the girl was lying on her grandmother’s bed when she felt the urge to touch her.
He asked if he could do it and when she nodded, he undressed the girl and abused her.
The court heard that the young man was disgusted with himself after doing so. But he also decided that the consequences “were not so bad”, as he felt that the victim probably could not understand what had happened.
About six months later, he abused her again, and by December 2014, the acts of abuse were more serious, as he sexually penetrated her without a condom.
He then sexually abused her several times between 2015 and 2017.
The DPP said the girl started feeling a stomach ache on August 15, 2017.
He added: “Although the defendant did not penetrate her vaginally, but anally and orally, she thought that the pregnancy could occur through anal penetration.”
She told her close friends that she was afraid of being pregnant. She also said that her cousin had sexually abused her.
Later, the girl’s teacher learned of the crimes and the police were alerted.
DPP Chong said: “During all the sexual activities, the victim felt scared, uncomfortable and confused as to why the accused was doing these acts.
“Although she felt uncomfortable about it, she didn’t really understand the seriousness of the matter. She also kept silent about all the previous incidents, as she did not want her family to be separated.”
Subsequently, the girl went for a medical examination and it was found that she had no sexually transmitted infections. Since then, the attacker has apologized to his parents, the court heard.
He was offered bail on Thursday and ordered to turn himself in to state court on November 12 to begin serving his sentence.
For each count of sexual penetration of a child under the age of 14, an offender can be imprisoned for up to 20 years and fined or punished.
