Ralph Hasenhuttl is sweating from Danny Ings’ fitness after the English forward suffered a knee injury in Southampton’s 4-3 win at Aston Villa.

Ings scored the Saints’ fourth goal of the afternoon but required treatment late in the game and was substituted in the 85th minute.

The 28-year-old has already scored five goals in the first seven games of the season and a period on the sidelines would be a huge blow to Southampton.

At his postgame press conference, Saints boss Hasnehuttl was clearly concerned about the extent of the injury, which occurred right in front of him.

Ings was substituted in the 85th minute after falling clutching his knee

He said: “It was such a tough match, maybe (the match) was too difficult at times.

“Ingsy’s (injury) doesn’t look good. It was right for me and we know his history with his knee.”

Ings previously suffered a left anterior cruciate ligament injury and a serious right knee injury while at Liverpool and spent a total of 18 months on the sidelines.

Hasenhuttl confirmed that the forward, who scored 22 league goals last season, will undergo a scan tomorrow to discover the extent of the injury.

He added: “Danny was immediately yelling ‘my knee, my knee!’ It doesn’t look good. “

The Southampton manager also confirmed that Ryan Bertrand and Jan Bednarek were injured in the Premier League tie, but a thrilling victory in the Midlands gave cause for joy.

The Saints took a 4-0 lead at Villa Park thanks to a header from Jannik Vestergaard, two free throws from James Ward-Prowse and a shot from Ings.

But they were given a late scare when Villa rallied, with Tyrone Mings backing down after a corner, while Ollie Watkins and Jack Grealish struck in overtime.

The result moves Southampton to third place in the table, while Villa slipped to sixth after their impressive start to the season ended abruptly with back-to-back losses.
