Sky Sports expert Paul Merson has praised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for allowing Bruno Fernandes to have a nearly free role at Manchester United.

The diminutive midfielder has been an integral part of United’s renaissance for the past year.

The Sporting Lisbon star arrived last January and United agreed to an initial fee of £ 47 million, although the add-ons could increase the total cost to £ 67.6 million.

Fernandes responded with eight goals and seven assists to help United finish fourth. And this season he has 11 goals and seven assists in 16 Premier League games.

Merson says the Portugal star has been the 2020 signing, but thinks Solskjaer deserves praise for releasing him.

“I would say yes (which was the 2020 signing) and I think it is a great management of Solskjaer for what he has done,” he said. Sky Sports.

“He can play the way he wants. No other Manchester United player can go out and play like he does.

“Sometimes in games he is anonymous and other players can be harassed, but he can do whatever he wants.

“The Leicester goal is trying to do in his own field, but he plays in his own way and I think that is brilliant for the coach.

“It is very rare that in a big football club someone is told to do what they want.

“Try whatever you want to try and if it doesn’t come out, you’re fine.

“He is a great management and I think he is a special player.”

United have joined reigning champions Liverpool with 33 points after 16 games in clinching a close 2-1 victory in an entertaining New Year’s Day clash with top-flight Aston Villa.

Liverpool, however, will face Southampton on Monday as they look to move away from Solskjaer’s side, ahead of the teams’ meeting on 17 January.

Merson added: “I love watching him play and what I love about him when he’s not doing well is that he will keep doing what he’s doing, he won’t hide and that’s what you call brave.

“Brave is not going to tackle 60-40 against, brave is when it doesn’t go well and you keep putting the ball in.”

Pellestri praises the united quartet

Meanwhile, Facundo Pellistri has named four Manchester United stars he enjoys training with after his promotion to the senior team during the festive period.

the 18 years He came to United from Uruguayan Peñarol in October and has impressed with the club’s under-23s since his £ 9 million trade.

Although Pellistri still awaits his senior debut trains regularly with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first team.

In an interview with MUTVAs cited by the MEN, he named the first team quartet, which predictably included compatriot Edinson Cavani, as four players he’s learning from. The other names are Marcus Rashford, Juan Mata, and Paul Pogba.
