The signing of Donny van de Beek by Manchester United has been, strangely, called a “panic buying” by Paul Merson.
the 23 years old, who is in international service with the Netherlands, moves to Old Trafford for a fee believed to be around € 39 million, plus another € 5 million in add-ons.
Van de Beek skipped Holland training on Monday to undergo his United medical check in the Netherlands and has signed an agreement until 2025.
The central midfielder will travel to the UK after his country’s Nations League game against Italy on Monday.
Some questions remain about the role Van de Beek will play at United. Some believe he will line up in a midfield three alongside Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes. Others, namely Mark Bosnich, believes that Pogba could lose his place on the side.
Either way, the transfer has been called a “panic buy” by Merson, who says he can’t understand what United sees in the player.
“Donny van de Beek looks like a panic buy at Manchester United,” he told the Daily star.
“I do not get it. They have just spent £ 40 million in a position they are already strong in. And how does he play with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes? You have to have someone who can play the fork. “
“That signature was like, ‘Oh, we haven’t bought from anyone yet, we’re going to buy from someone, who can we get?’ When you look at their midfield, Fred was improving and they have Scott McTominay. Now they won’t get a game.
And they just gave Nemanja Matic a new contract. Would they have done that if they knew they were going to get Van de Beek? It doesn’t make sense to me. Who makes these decisions?
“It’s like they were after Jadon Sancho. If you sign Sancho, Greenwood doesn’t play. For me they need another central “.

Three reasons why Solskjaer prefers Upamecano to Koulibaly
Meanwhile, it is reported that United will go ahead with their plans to sign Dayot Upamecano before the window closes.
The 21-year-old proved to be one of Europe’s most outstanding defenders this season. He was a key man when Julian Nagelsmann’s team reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.
United’s chances of hiring him seemed to have ended last month when he signed a new contract with the Bundesliga team. That tied him to the club until 2023. More significantly, it increased its exit clause to € 60 million.
However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains convinced that Upamecano should be a transfer focus for United.
Now a report has listed three reasons why Upamecano is seen as a more urgent transfer priority for United than Kalidou Koulibaly.
