SINGAPORE: For the fifth year in a row, 98.4% of sixth-grade primary school students who took the primary school completion exam (PSLE) reached secondary school.

A total of 39,995 candidates applied for the PSLE ​​this year, of which 39,361 students were assessed as eligible to advance to high school, said the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB). ) in a press release on Wednesday (Nov. 25).

Approximately two-thirds, or 66.3%, are eligible for the Express course, while 21.2% are eligible for the Normal (Academic) course and 11% for the Normal (Technical) course. These proportions are similar to last year’s 6th grade cohort, the MOE and SEAB said.

The 634 students who did not qualify for any of the three courses may choose to retake the PSLE ​​next year.

With a recommendation from the elementary school principal, they can also apply to Assumption Pathway School or NorthLight School for “a more practical and experiential approach to learning,” the agencies said.

Last week, the MOE announced that PSLE ​​candidates will receive their results in their classrooms rather than meeting as a cohort in the school hall as in previous years, given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Candidates who collect their results at school must observe safe distancing measures and may be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those who were unwell, or were under a quarantine order, a stay-at-home notice or a leave of absence, or who preferred not to collect their results in person, could view them online.

Eligible high school students can submit their choice forms online through the S1 Internet System (S1-IS) from now until 3 pm next Tuesday.

“When choosing a high school, parents and students should consider factors such as distinctive high school programs, co-curricular activities (CCA), spirit and culture,” the MOE and SEAB said.

“Parents and students are encouraged to take the time to explore the schools’ websites, social media pages, as well as participate in their virtual open houses, to learn more about the schools that interest them. before selecting schools. “

The results of the publication will be published on December 22 and can be accessed via SMS and S1-IS, or at the student’s elementary school.

This year, students do not need to report to their published high schools. Instead, they should check school websites beginning December 22 for more information, such as instructions on purchasing books and uniforms, book lists, and reporting details. Parents will also receive instructions on Parents Gateway.

“If students are unable to report to their assigned high school on the first day of school in January 2021 due to valid reasons, they can contact the assigned high school directly to confirm that they are occupying the spot and the school will be able to reserve the spot for them, ”said the MOE and SEAB.
