SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will be on local leave for two weeks from Thursday (December 17) to December 31, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday.

No interim Prime Minister will be appointed as Mr. Lee will remain accessible during this period, the Prime Minister’s Office added.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday night, Lee said he plans to spend time exploring Singapore and reading.

“I will not travel abroad this year. Instead, I will explore our island and catch up on my readings. I will update if I find anything interesting during my #jalanjalan,” Lee said.

Lee’s press secretary said in an update late Wednesday that Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat would also be on local leave for a few days while Lee is on leave.

“Prime Minister Lee decided that he could continue as he was not traveling and would continue to be available, rather than switching between himself and the DPM as acting prime minister,” Ms. Chang Li Lin said.

Heng will preside over cabinet meetings during this period, he added.
