SINGAPORE: A 56-year-old man is under investigation for allegedly submitting a false report that he was robbed, police said in a press release on Friday (November 20).

The man had filed a report around 10 a.m. on Thursday alleging that he had been stolen by two unknown individuals near Geylang Lorong 18 around midnight.

Police detected several inconsistencies in the man’s account, and preliminary investigations suggested that he had provided them with false information by claiming that he had been the victim of a robbery.

Police investigations against the man are ongoing.

For giving any information he knows to be false to a public servant, the man can be jailed for up to one year, or fined up to S $ 5,000, or both.

“The police would like to remind the public that police resources could have been better used to deal with real crimes and emergencies than to investigate false reports or false information,” the press release said.

“Those who file false police reports or provide false information will face serious consequences under the law.”
