SINGAPORE – Police arrested eight men and a woman in connection with an armed revolt between two groups at the People’s Park Center on Sunday (May 10) around 3.30 in the morning.
These are in addition to the three men who were arrested at the crime scene the same day, police said in a press release on Tuesday.
The riots stemmed from a relationship dispute
Between Sunday and Tuesday, officials from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the Police Intelligence Department and the Central Police Division carried out several raids across the island in connection with the riots.
Eight men and a woman, aged 18 to 28, were arrested for being members of an illegal society, illegal assembly and riots armed with deadly weapons.
A video circulating on social media showed a group of young men in black waiting in the elevator lobby of a building along Upper Cross Street. They were then attacked by another group and some of the blacks were seen trying to flee the scene.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident stemmed from a relationship dispute between one member of each group over a woman.
If found guilty of deadly weapons riots, each of them can be jailed for up to 10 years and jailed. The crime of illegal assembly carries a prison sentence of up to two years and / or a fine, while the crime of being a member of an illegal society carries a prison sentence of up to three years and / or a fine of $ 5,000.

Police are also investigating one of the men for harboring two other of those arrested. Protecting the fugitives is punishable by imprisonment and a fine, police said in the press release.
All arrested persons will also be investigated for non-compliance with safe distancing measures under Regulation COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) 2020.
Police are also requesting information on the whereabouts of two people, Muhammad Syukri Muhammad Iskandar and Muhammad Ilham Noordin, to help with investigations.
