Paul Scholes says he understands why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did not substitute for Fred before the midfielder’s red card against PSG because Manchester United were playing excellently with him at the wing.
The Brazilian was the subject of controversy in the first half when he nodded towards Leandro Paredes, with the referee only opting to brandish a yellow card after being asked to watch a replay of the incident on the pitch monitor.
However, Solskjaer kept Fred on the field and the 27-year-old finally saw red after the break for what was a fair tackle to former United midfielder Ander Herrera.
Speaking about BT Sport, Scholes said he could understand why Fred stayed on the field with the strength of United’s performance in the first half.
He said, “In hindsight, I probably should have been [taken off]. I can understand why Ole has not removed it, in the last 35 minutes of that first half United were excellent. They were really controlling the game and I think Ole will be very happy with the performance, I thought they were excellent. “

Scholes added: “Fred should really know that whatever other tackle he’s going to make, the referee will be ready to send him off. He’s unlucky as he gets the ball first, but the referee is waiting for him to.”
Rio Ferdinand agreed that Fred was walking a tightrope while holding a yellow card and speculated that he might have been moments away from being replaced when the red one happened.
He said: “Van de Beek was traded and we were sitting here wondering if Ole was waiting for the next time the ball went off to get it.
“Fred was following that line and he had lost a bit of control, you see those positions where you think the referee has given you one or two free chances and you have to calm down.”
