SINGAPORE – Starting Wednesday (October 28), the new Sengkang City Council of the Workers’ Party (SKTC) will take over the full management and maintenance of areas that were previously in other constituencies, but came under the newly formed Sengkang. GRC in the recent general elections.
The change was announced by the Pasir Ris-Punggol and Ang Mo Kio municipalities, both led by the Popular Action Party (PAP), in separate statements on Tuesday.
The Pasir Ris-Punggol City Council also said that it handed over its two offices in Sengkang GRC to the SKTC on Tuesday (October 27). They are located in Block 266 Compassvale Bow and Block 156A in Rivervale Crescent.
Sengkang GRC, with over 120,000 voters, is made up in part of the former Punggol East SMC and the Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC Sengkang Central division, both managed by the Pasir Ris-Punggol City Council.
It is also made up of parts of Sengkang West SMC, which was managed by the Ang Mo Kio City Council.
The municipalities control, manage, maintain and improve the common areas of the residential and commercial properties of their municipalities for the residents.
In the July general elections, the Workers’ Party (WP) team won 52.12 percent of the vote in Sengkang GRC.
His team, consisting of lawyer He Ting Ru, economist Jamus Lim, equity research analyst Louis Chua, and social activist Raeesah Khan, beat the PAP team of Labor Chief Ng Chee Meng, the Chief Minister of State. Lam Pin Min, Chief Parliamentary Secretary Amrin Amin and attorney Raymond Lye.
The Straits Times understands that the two PAP councils have handed over to SKTC the contracts of the managing agents they had appointed to carry out the day-to-day operations of the areas now located in Sengkang GRC.
PAP city councils also said that arrangements have been made for residents, who now pay their service and conservation charges through Giro or other recurring payment schemes, to continue to do so without interruption.
According to the law, municipalities have up to 90 days, from their constitution, to take over the management of the areas that are transferred to them.
The SKTC was one of the 17 city councils that were formed on July 30, which means that it must take over the management of the transferred areas as of Wednesday.
The properties that Pasir Ris-Punggol City Council will transfer to SKTC include blocks 201A to 299C in the Compassvale area, blocks 101 to 197 along the Rivervale area, and blocks 121C to 282C located in Sengkang Central and Sengkang East .
Ang Mo Kio City Council will relocate on blocks 301A to 356B in the Anchorvale and Sengkang East Way area.
Both councils wished SKTC the best in serving Sengkang residents.
The Pasir Ris-Punggol City Council, in its statement, also thanked the residents of Sengkang for their support and said they hope they will continue to work with SKTC in caring for the people and the city.
Similarly, Ang Mo Kio City Council said it was grateful for the opportunity to serve residents in the former Sengkang West SMC in recent years.
