Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain says he wants to be a “constant threat” in the future and eventually reach “another level” at the club.
English he has suffered two injury setbacks at Anfield that have halted his progress.
After an impressive debut season, he found himself with a serious knee injury in April 2018. In fact, that problem kept him out for the vast majority of the 2018/19 season.
But after returning to similar form last season, he injured his knee ligaments in August. Chief Jurgen Klopp initially said he would be absent for about five weeks., only to have him come back earlier this month.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has a penchant for bursting into midfield with energy. Additionally, he has often used that energy to launch a long-range attack or similar game-changing moment.
Talking to The Telegraph, the midfielder explained that he plans to return to his previous form and even improve.
“It’s about delivering numbers. In general, the goals I make are often not easy goals, “he said.
“Goals from outside the area should be the advantage. When I look back at last season, I remember the goals against Bournemouth and West Ham where I put myself in positions where I should be scoring.
“That’s where I know I can take my game to another level. I want to be a more constant threat in the future. “
In fact, Oxlade-Chamberlain enjoyed his most productive season in front of goal for Liverpool last term. He scored eight goals, four of them in the Premier League and three in the Champions League.
However, he believes that being his worst critic drives him to achieve more on the field.
Oxlade-Chamberlain demands more of himself
“I have always been self-critical,” added the midfielder. “I know when I feel good. That is reflected in performance. I can feel when I’m on a roll.
“I hate games that pass me by. Especially on this team. When I’m in midfield, I know my role and my job, so when I feel like I’m not doing enough: running with the ball, creating, giving Mo [Salah], Healthy [Mane] and bobby [Firmino] Scoring opportunities, I acknowledge that.
“That’s where self-criticism comes from. I wanted more of myself for much of last season. I can look back and say ‘eight goals, my most in a season, and the fourth highest on the team’.
“But to be honest, I was not happy with how I performed for most of it. I expect more of myself in certain areas at certain times. When I don’t, I get frustrated. “
Oxlade-Chamberlain returned from injury as a substitute in a 7-0 win at Crystal Palace. As such, he could be in line for a bigger role against West Brom on Sunday.
