SINGAPORE – A man initially charged with the murder of another man in Orchard Towers last year received a conditional warning on Thursday (October 15).
Chan Jia Xing, 27, received a discharge that does not amount to an acquittal by the state courts.
This means that Chan will no longer face the charge of associating with a co-defendant in possession of a folding Kerambit knife, provided he refrains from criminal conduct for one year.
If you reoffend at any time within a year, you can be prosecuted for this charge as well as the new offense.
Speaking to reporters outside of court, Chan said he was grateful to his attorneys Cory Wong, Shane Yeo and Josephus Tan of Invictus Law.
When he was first charged, Chan, who is soon expecting a baby, recalled that his parents encouraged him to stay strong and “not be silly.”
When asked if he could stay crime-free for a year, Chan said he “definitely will, for the rest of my life.”
In a statement to the media, Tan said: “We are grateful to the AGC (Attorney General) for making the right decision to drop the charge against our client after our representations. It has been an arduous journey for him. She now looks forward to the birth of her firstborn next month instead of spending time in prison for this unfortunate tragedy. “
Chan had been part of a group accused of causing the death of Satheesh Noel Gobidass, 31, around 6:25 a.m. on July 2 last year at the entrance to Orchard Towers. This group consisted of Tan Sen Yang, Joel Tan Yun Sheng, Ang Da Yuan, Natalie Siow Yu Zhen, Loo Boon Chong, and Tan Hong Sheng. Siow was jailed for five months for her role last Friday.
He was initially charged with murder while taking part in an illegal assembly with the intention of causing harm to Satheesh. He was one of seven defendants in court one day after the incident.
Chan’s murder charge was later dropped and replaced by a fellowship charge with Tan Sen Yang, who was in possession of a folding Kerambit knife.
Of the group, Tan Sen Yang, Tan Hong Sheng, and Loo Boon Chong have not been treated. The rest have been jailed for their role in the incident.
