SINGAPORE – Opposition politician Lim Tean was arrested on Friday (October 2) for alleged criminal breach of trust (CBT), and is also under investigation for alleged illegal harassment.

Police said in a press release that a former client of Lim, a lawyer who is also a leader of the Voice of the People political party, filed a police report.

The former client alleged that the 55-year-old man had misappropriated a sum of money that the court awarded him for damages in a motor injury lawsuit.

Regarding the crime of illegal stalking, police said they received a report from Lim’s former employee, who alleged that he had harassed her while working at his law firm. The former employee had referred the text messages exchanged between her and Lim to the police.

Police said they sent Lim a written notice on Sept. 23 to attend a mandatory interview at the Police Cantonment Complex to help with the two alleged crimes on Sept. 28. They told him that he could reschedule the interview for another date if he wished.

However, Lim responded through his lawyer on September 27 that he does not intend to appear for any police interviews. He also alleged that the investigations were politically motivated; the police said such allegations are “unfounded”.

“As Mr. Lim Tean did not cooperate with the notice to attend the interview with the police and had clearly stated that he had no intention of complying, the police had no choice but to arrest Mr. Lim Tean to carry out the investigations “. police said in the press release.

“This would not have been necessary, if he complied with the police notice to come to the interview.

“The police reject their accusations that the investigations are politically motivated. The alleged victims of Mr. Lim Tean had filed police complaints alleging serious crimes committed by him against them, and the police have a duty to investigate the allegations.

Lim has instructed attorney M Ravi to act as his defense attorney.

Ravi had posted a post on Facebook saying that three officials from the Department of Trade Affairs had arrested Lim while preparing his defense case with political activist Leong Sze Hian over Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s Leong defamation lawsuit, which is scheduled to start next Tuesday. .

“The issue regarding the investigation is before the civil court and I have written to the police in that regard to respect due process,” Ravi wrote in his Facebook post.

He added that preparations for his civil lawsuit still have a long way to go, but they have received no word on when Lim will be released. He currently has no other attorney to assist him.
