SINGAPORE – No local Covid-19 infections were reported on Tuesday (October 13) for the first time in more than six months, but Education Minister Lawrence Wong cautioned against complacency, saying Singapore would likely see new cases with the weather.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday morning, Mr. Wong, who also co-chairs the multi-ministerial task force addressing Covid-19, said that “the virus has not been eradicated,” adding that it is “still circulating. in our community. “
“The number is zero today (Tuesday), but it is likely that we will see new cases appear over time,” said Wong, adding that he understood that people were feeling tired with the current measures and wanted to resume more activities.
“We still need to keep our guard up and be very disciplined in complying with all necessary safeguards. That is the mindset that will allow us to continue on this path of progressive reopening in a safe and sustainable manner,” he said.
Wong also thanked the leaders in the fight against the coronavirus outbreak and everyone who has been working hard to control the infection over the past few months.
On Tuesday, the Health Ministry reported four imported Covid-19 infections, while no new cases were announced in workers’ bedrooms for the first time since March 25.
European governments have recently been imposing new restrictions and asking their citizens to make sacrifices in a bid to contain a record surge in coronavirus cases.
The Czech Republic has closed schools and the Netherlands has closed virtually all night activity.
Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that bars and pubs will be closed in the hardest-hit parts of England from Wednesday, even as his top health adviser warned that it will not be enough to slow the spread of the virus.
Europe recorded nearly 700,000 new cases last week, the highest weekly count since the pandemic began, the World Health Organization said in its latest report on Monday.
