Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says “anything can happen” in the Premier League title race this season and has refused to rule out Manchester United.

United finished 33 points behind Liverpool last season despite finishing the late season strong.

However, his start to the current season was slow and Solskjaer says he knew things would be tough after a very limited preseason due to United’s streak in the Europa League.

But after a morale-boosting week at Old Trafford with wins over PSG and RB Leipzig, Solskjaer is enjoying the rest of the season.

The Norwegian coach says he is “excited” at the prospect of the title race and is hopeful that United will be one of the clubs that can rival Liverpool and Manchester City this time.

“I think football has developed and many clubs have developed deep strength and the ability to fight for trophies, even though the last two seasons had two teams running,” Solskjaer said.

“I think this season a lot of us, right below them, we would expect to present a challenge, back then it was us or Arsenal, and then Chelsea came along.

“Now it’s more exciting for me and the fans that I’m not one of these two. Anything can happen this season with what’s happening around the world and we’re only taking one game at a time. “

When asked about United’s development, Solskjaer was reluctant to comment on how far his team has come.

“Well, we keep working, we want to develop, we want to improve, it is not for me to say how far we have come,” Solskajer said. “But I am very satisfied with the response after what we did at the beginning of the season.

“We knew we had to hang on from the beginning and try to score points on the board because we were far behind, but now we feel fit, strong and competitive in every game.

After a streak of poor results earlier in the season, Solskjaer admitted that the recent beating by Spurs put United into action.

“I think any result as brutal as 6-1 would have to get a response and of course it has been dealt with internally,” Solskajer said.

“We have changed a couple of things, we have put the players in shape and I think the form of defeat is not something we have to face again.

“On the other hand, things happen in football these days and the response has been fantastic, and that’s what worries me, because we wanted to end that as soon as possible and move on.”

Equipment depth

After a string of summer additions, including Alex Telles, Donny van de Beek and Edinson Cavani, the United manager admitted he was happy with his options.

“At the moment, we look like a Manchester United team,” added Solskjaer.

“I have opportunities, competition for places, and any successful team in the modern era of football has had the option to rest the players, to rotate. And that’s probably the only way you can last in the most intense league in the world, and also with the Champions League involved, you want to go for the trophies. “
