Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lines up ex-defender Jonny Evans’ return from January transfer

Jonny Evans is poised for a surprising return to Manchester United.

The Leicester defender is out of contract at the end of the season and his former club is aware if the Foxes offer him a new contract.

If Evans’s future is not resolved by the New Year, then United will consider bringing him back to Old Trafford cheaply.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking for a reliable center back cover, and the 32-year-old Evans has been one of the most consistent players in the Premier League in recent years.

Two seasons ago, Pep Guardiola failed with an attempt to bring him back to Manchester with bitter rivals City.

Evans has had an impressive performance for Leicester

Belfast-born Evans began his career with United and has three Premier League title medals from his time at the club.

He left to join West Brom after nine years at Old Trafford, and selling him has always been seen as a big mistake.

The Northern Ireland international joined Leicester in 2018 when the Foxes activated an exit clause in their contract with West Brom following the relegation of the Baggies from the top flight.

Solskjaer seeks to strengthen

Evans has been a regular with Brendan Rodgers and has impressed during his time at King Power.

He was Harry Maguire’s defensive partner during United’s time as captain in the Midlands, and he played an important role in their development, to the point where United squandered a world-record fee on a defender to get it.

And while Evans remains Rodgers’ starter, a return to Old Trafford will likely appeal to the Northern Irishman.
