SINGAPORE – An associate professor at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) was sentenced on Thursday (September 24) to five days in jail after his car struck a motorcyclist, who suffered multiple fractures.
Lau Kim Teen was also disqualified from driving all kinds of vehicles for two years.
A check on the NTU website shows that the Malaysian, who is a permanent resident of Singapore, is from their Center for Continuing Professional Education. He had also served as program director for two Master of Science programs.
The website says: “He currently teaches courses in electronics and integrated circuit design at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
“His current research activities are focused on integrated circuits and low-power applications.”
The 61-year-old pleaded guilty to causing serious injury while driving negligently.
The court heard that shortly before the accident on December 30, 2018, Lau had gone to dinner at a Pioneer Road restaurant, drank some beer, and left around 8.45pm.
He was driving the car for about 10 minutes when he came to a traffic light at a T-junction between Jurong West Street 93 and Jurong West Street 92.
At around the same time, 24-year-old Naresh Balan was riding his motorcycle in the opposite direction and had gone straight on, as the green light was in his favor.
Lau was unable to maintain adequate surveillance while turning right at his discretion and did not yield to Mr. Naresh.
The car collided with the motorcycle and Mr. Naresh briefly lost consciousness after falling from his vehicle.
A passerby alerted the police and Lau waited at the scene for the officers to arrive. Police showed up shortly after, and an officer noticed that he smelled of alcohol.
Lau was arrested and taken to a police station, where he was found to have 15 micrograms of alcohol in 100 ml of breath. This is below the prescribed limit of 35 micrograms of alcohol in 100 ml of breath.
An ambulance took Mr. Naresh to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, where he was diagnosed with injuries that included fractures to his right thigh and right wrist.
He was hospitalized until January 4 of last year, the court heard.
Deputy Prosecutor Thiagesh Sukumaran said: “The victim continues to suffer from immobility in the right wrist and left thumb due to the incident.
“He is … still undergoing physical therapy pending surgery to remove the implants in his right hand and right leg.”
Responding to inquiries on Friday, NTU said it expects all members of its community to “maintain the highest ethical standards and obey the law at all times.”
An NTU spokesperson also said Lau is undergoing a disciplinary process.
For causing serious injury from negligent driving, a criminal can be jailed for up to two years and fined up to $ 5,000.
