SINGAPORE – The president of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), Koh Poh Tiong, will step down on October 31, after serving in the post for eight years.
Koh will be replaced by Arthur Lang, CEO of Singtel’s International Group, who joined the foundation as a director of the board in 2015.
In announcing Mr. Koh’s resignation from the post, the foundation highlighted his “remarkable contribution to shaping and strengthening corporate governance, transparency and accountability policies”, and “firm conviction that no one should be denied access to dialysis in Singapore because of its limitations. “
Under Mr. Koh’s leadership, NKF has invested in building infrastructure and capacity, increasing the number of community dialysis centers from 25 in 2012 to 38 now. Two more are in the works to serve kidney patients who need them close to home. Currently, NKF serves more than 4,800 kidney patients and beneficiaries.
Koh also prioritized quality care to meet the multiple needs of patients during his tenure. The foundation introduced nocturnal dialysis to benefit patients who require more hours of dialysis for better treatment results. This treatment is done for seven to eight hours while the patient sleeps, instead of the usual four hours.
In 2014, NKF established a $ 10 million Education and Prevention Fund to invest in ways and means to strengthen kidney disease prevention.
Mr. Koh, former CEO of Fraser & Neave, assumed the presidency in place of Mr. Gerard Ee in 2012. Mr. Ee was appointed to the position by the Ministry of Health in 2005 after the luxurious lifestyle of the then NKF CEO, TT Durai, and three other board members. Having worked in the finance and real estate sectors prior to joining Singtel, Mr. Lang previously served as a board member for the Land Transportation Authority and currently sits on the advisory boards of the Lee Kong Chian School of Business.
