NEW YORK (AFP) – Cheerful New Yorkers took to the streets on Saturday (November 7) after Democrat Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump to win the White House, erupting in celebration when the business mogul was told and former star of The Apprentice: “You are fired.”
Revelers cheered in a city that has struggled for years with the president who rose to fame in New York real estate.
A dependable Democratic stronghold, America’s financial capital’s disdain for Republican policies was no secret.
In Manhattan, residents shouted and clapped, some waving flags and others banging pots from their balconies as car horns signaled the applause.
Catherine Griffin wept tears of joy outside with one of her two children and told AFP: “I am happy that Trump is gone from our lives, hopefully forever.”
“Having a little bit of normalcy in our lives and having my children see a decent human being in charge again, that makes me happy for the day,” the 47-year-old said.
Hundreds of people gathered in front of the Trump Tower, like huge crowds at Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza, in a nod to “You’re fired!” catchphrase from his days hosting The Apprentice – chanted: “Trump got fired!”
Thousands more began to accumulate in Times Square and Columbus Circle, where a demonstration to protect the integrity of the vote count turned into a giant party.
“Biden finally won,” said JD Beebe, a 35-year-old man who works for an online company.
“I feel like it’s a very American moment,” he said, adding, “I know the country is almost 50/50 divided, but I still think it’s a very good day for democracy.
“Honestly, I hope I don’t have to be on a roller coaster every day about the ridiculous things our leaders will say or what they will do to any oppressed part of the community.
