MANILA (PHILIPPINE DAILY INQUIRER / ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – A stray bullet claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl during the New Year’s Eve celebration in Lanao del Norte, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Friday (January 1). ).

PNP spokesman Brigadier General Ildebrandi Usana said the incident, the only fatality during the New Year, occurred around 1 a.m. on January 1.

“There was a victim, a 12-year-old boy died as a result of a stray bullet. This happened in Lanao del Norte,” he said at a press conference.

Brigadier General Usana said the girl was playing outside with her cousins, holding her piggy bank, when she suddenly dropped to the ground.

Initially it was thought that he had just slipped, but it was later discovered that he was shot in the head.

“The doctor saw that the girl not only slipped, but had a bullet,” Brigadier Usana said.

He added that the police are already investigating the incident. Investigators are only waiting for the girl’s autopsy to retrieve the slug, which remains lodged in her head.

Meanwhile, two others were injured by stray bullets over the New Year, one of whom is a six-year-old boy.

The six-year-old boy, a native of Sta. Catalina, Negros Occidental, was hit in the abdomen while urinating outside. Brigadier General Usana said the incident occurred around 2 a.m.

Brig Gen Usana said the boy is currently recovering in hospital.

The other stray bullet incident was reported in the city of Dagupan, where an adult man was shot in the leg.

Brigadier Usana said the victim was about to sleep when a stray bullet pierced his ceiling and struck him in the leg.

The incident happened around 3 am.
