Nearly 1,000 precision engineering jobs available in S’pore since April, with volume for PMET, Manpower news and news highlights

SINGAPORE – Close to 1,000 jobs in the precision engineering industry have been available to job seekers since April under SGUnited’s Jobs and Skills Package, with nearly four out of five jobs for professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMET ).

Approximately 750 of the jobs are for PMETs in roles such as product engineer, electrical and electronics engineer, and quality assurance inspector. The remaining 230 non-PMET jobs include production operator, welder and pipe fitter.

Meanwhile, there have been around 440 internships and attachments available in precision engineering, with 360 for PMET roles and 80 for non-PMET roles.

Of the 80 training opportunities available, 60 are for PMET roles, while 20 are for non-PMET roles.

Salaries for PMET jobs offered in the precision engineering industry vary based on the nature of the specific job and the skills required.

For example, industrial and production engineers can earn between $ 2,600 and $ 6,000, with the 50th percentile at $ 3,350. Manufacturing engineering technicians can earn between $ 1,500 and $ 2,350, with the 50th percentile at $ 1,750.

Human Resources Minister Josephine Teo, in her weekly report on the employment situation on Monday (September 14) noted that between April and July of this year, more than 260 people have found work in the precision engineering industry through through SGUnited’s Jobs and Skills Package, with two out of five jobs. -seekers are mid-career people who participated in career conversion programs.

He added that since April, more than 30 job seekers have also entered internships and adjuncts organized by the company.

For job seekers who are new to the industry, there are career conversion programs to help them, he added.

One of them is Tim Tan, 56, a former director of production and planning in the oil and gas industry who was fired after his old company underwent a restructuring.

With the help of Workforce Singapore’s Careers Connect job search services, Tan joined 3D Metalforge, a small and medium-sized company specializing in additive manufacturing and 3D printed products and services, as an operations manager.

Tan then enrolled in a six-month professional conversion program for advanced manufacturing engineers in March to help him take on his new role.

Ms Teo also pointed out that despite the weaker market, the precision engineering industry managed to grow 11.4 percent between January and July this year compared to the same period last year.

Among the best performing companies in the industry are companies serving the semiconductor and medical technology sectors, due to increased demand for Covid-19-related products such as diagnostic kits and ventilators, he added.

They also include companies that supply machinery, systems and parts for high-tech appliances to support remote work, and companies that provide digital solutions such as sensors for stores to adhere to safe distancing guidelines.

UPDATE THE UNITED JOBS AND SKILLS PACKAGE

On Monday, the Ministry of Manpower also provided more details on the number of jobs, internships and training opportunities that have been created so far under the SGUnited Jobs and Skills Package.

At the end of July, there were around 50,000 government-funded jobs, internships, and training opportunities or jobs in public sector agencies. Of this, about 12,700 were short-term positions and 10,500 were long-term positions for a total of 23,200 government positions. Long-term jobs refer to placements lasting more than 12 months and are not limited to permanent positions.

During the same period, private sector employers provided around 42,000 jobs: 8,000 short-term and 34,500 long-term.

Meanwhile, around 24,000 job seekers have taken over the jobs, traineeships and training opportunities on offer.

Among those who were PMET, around 5,200 found short-term jobs, while 4,600 got long-term jobs.

For non-PMETs, about 8,600 accepted short-term jobs and 5,200 found long-term jobs.
