SINGAPORE: A woman accused of abandoning her baby in a garbage dump in Bedok North in January was detained for three months, and the judge urged the prosecution to speed up investigations.

The 26-year-old woman, who cannot be named to protect the child’s identity, has been referred since February 15.

She was later accused of exposing her son with the intention of abandoning him by throwing him down the ramp at 6.15am on January 7.

The newborn was reportedly discovered by several cleaners cleaning the trash when they saw him wrapped in a bloodstained plastic bag at the supermarket.

After she was charged, the woman was sent to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for psychiatric observation.

However, three months have passed since then, the judge said. He urged the prosecution to speed up the investigations and obtain a “concrete position” at the next hearing.

Noting the length of pretrial detention, the police prosecutor said they would like to offer a lower bond of S $ 10,000.

The woman’s attorney said her client “unfortunately was unable to post bail,” but said she wanted to be rescued to gain access to her son.

The defense attorney asked the prosecution if he was considering requesting a discharge or dropping the charge.

The prosecutor said he was unable to disclose his position and asked the lawyer to write to the Chambers of the Attorney General for more information.

She requested a six-week postponement to complete the investigations and confirm the medical reports, with clarifications from the IMH.

However, the defense requested a shorter postponement.

The judge deferred the case until June 11.

If convicted of exposing her child with the intention of abandoning her, the woman can be imprisoned for up to seven years, fined or both.
