SINGAPORE – More mailboxes have been tampered with at various Housing Board properties across the island, with grocery vouchers destined for low-income Singaporeans allegedly stolen.

Police said on Wednesday (October 14) that they had received reports of such incidents in residential areas, including Marsiling and Bukit Merah, and a case of mischief in Block 89 Redhill Close. The police are investigating these cases.

This comes after SingPost said that mailboxes in the Redhill and Lengkok Bahru blocks were previously found forcibly open on Tuesday morning (October 13).

The affected blocks were blocks 55, 56, 57, 58 and 59 in Lengkok Bahru; Blocks 71 and 72 at Redhill Road; and blocks 89 and 90 in Redhill Close.

A 37-year-old woman was arrested on Sunday (October 11) on suspicion of stealing Budget 2020 grocery vouchers from mailboxes in Lorong 7 Toa Payoh.

It was the second such arrest in two months. On September 11, five 18-year-olds were arrested for allegedly stealing packages from six HDB apartment blocks in Choa Chu Kang.

Those found guilty of theft can be jailed for up to three years, fined, or both.

In a Facebook notice, police advised members of the public eligible for Budget 2020 grocery vouchers to pick them up from their mailboxes as soon as possible.

Those who suspect that their coupons have been stolen should immediately file a police report and call the Grocery Voucher hotline at 1800-2222-888 to request that their coupons be voided and replaced.

The police also urged people to ensure their mailboxes are protected at all times and to report any suspicious individuals loitering in mailboxes to the police.
