SINGAPORE: A 26-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of Monday (December 28) after injuring police officers and hitting several vehicles while trying to escape.

He is suspected of being involved in a case of reckless act that caused drug-related injuries and crime, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said in a press release.

At approximately 4 a.m. on Monday, police carried out an operation to detain the man in a parking lot in an open space along 33 Bukit Batok Street.

“The officers confronted the man, but he refused to obey and tried to escape in his vehicle,” police said.

The man struck seven parked vehicles and a police vehicle in the process, SPF said.

A video of the incident posted on a YouTube channel for Singapore drivers showed a silver sedan speeding back past a stopped police car, while striking at least three parked cars.

The sedan’s damaged front bumper falls off in the process. The car then sped out of the parking lot.

Two policemen were injured by the man during the incident and were taken to hospital, where they were discharged after receiving treatment, SPF said.

Police immediately launched an island-wide operation to locate the man after his escape attempt.

At approximately 5.10 am, a little over an hour later, his getaway vehicle was located around Block 257 Jurong East Street 24.

“With the help of images from the police cameras, the officers established that the man had entered a residential unit in said block,” said SPF.

He was detained inside the apartment.

“The police have managed to arrest the suspect despite the dynamic and challenging circumstances,” said Mr. Zed Teo, Ang Mo Kio Division Commander and Deputy Deputy Commissioner of Police.

“We will not hesitate to take strong action against criminals who blatantly ignore the law and threaten the safety of our neighborhoods.”

The man was also wanted for escaping bail for a prominent case of willfully causing injury with a dangerous weapon, and for driving while disqualified, SPF said.

In addition, he was wanted by the Central Narcotics Office (CNB) for not showing up for a urine test and for drug use.

He will be charged Wednesday with two counts of reckless act that caused harm. If convicted, he faces up to one year in jail, a fine of up to S $ 5,000, or both.

Police investigations are ongoing and the CNB is also investigating the man’s drug-related activities.
