SINGAPORE – A man who suffered from a jealous-type delusional disorder when he stabbed his wife to death in their bedroom, also suffered from acute alcohol intoxication at the same time.
This contributed to Krishnan Raju’s offense, as there was a deterioration in attention or memory during the episode due to his intoxication, Judge Hoo Sheau Peng ruled.
Given the facts of the case, the High Court judge sentenced the 53-year-old man to 10 years in prison, but did not impose flogging or jail time in lieu of flogging due to Krishnan’s medical condition.
Krishnan had pleaded guilty to one count of wrongful death for stabbing Raithena Vaithena Samy with intent to inflict bodily injury that could result in death, at her residence in a Loyang Gardens condominium on October 26, 2017.
He ended up killing his wife for 28 years, after years of possessively monitoring her whereabouts.
Jealous rage
Krishnan’s jealousy intensified in the last year of their marriage, as he often stalked 44-year-old Raithena, checking her phone and accusing her in front of her family of cheating on him. At the time, Raithena was having a clandestine affair with a male colleague since November 2016.
His suspicions against his wife reached their peak after he heard a voice recording where she mentioned another man’s name. This was after he installed an audio recording device in his daughter’s bedroom to record his wife’s conversations.
On the night of the incident, Krishnan, a self-employed bus driver, returned home after work and drank gin. He retrieved the recordings from his daughter’s bedroom and heard his wife mention a man named “Saravanan.” The impression was formed that his wife was having an affair and was laughing at him.
Raithena returned home around 9pm and took a shower in the toilet attached to the master bedroom. By then, her husband had drunk 200 ml of gin, which was 43 percent alcohol.
The drunk man took a knife from the kitchen sink and a hammer from a toolbox, went into the bathroom where Raithena was showering, and stabbed her, leaving a trail of blood on the bathroom floor. He dragged her into the master bedroom where he again stabbed and strangled her as she screamed.
He then struck an electrical outlet with his hammer, causing his house to shut down, before fleeing his home.
Before escaping to Malaysia, Krishnan, who shared a 20-year-old son and a 22-year-old daughter with Raithena, sent one last message to his loved ones to “forgive” him.
He fled to Malaysia but returned to surrender at Woodlands Checkpoint on October 27, 2017.
While Judge Hoo accepted that Krishnan was suffering from acute alcohol intoxication, she noted that this was a minor contributing factor to the crime. That said, Krishnan’s drunkenness was also an aggravating factor, as was his inability to seek help for his wife after the act.
The judge found that Krishnan’s delusional disorder substantially affected his mental responsibility for the act of causing the death of his wife.
While there was no indication of how long Krishnan would need antipsychotic medication or treatment, it was also clear that he had a low risk of recidivism as long as he complied with taking his medication, the judge said.
Said Judge Hoo, “I also notice that the defendant was (and is) sorry. This is demonstrated by his suicide attempts after the attack, his surrender to the authorities the next day, his expressions of remorse in his statements and his plea of guilt ”.
For wrongful death, Krishnan could have been jailed for life or up to 20 years. He cannot be spanked because he is over 50 years old.
