SINGAPORE – A man became enraged and beat his estranged wife in front of the vice principals of their children’s primary school after a domestic dispute.
The two assistant principals and a school counselor had to intervene before the wife asked for police help.
The offender was sentenced Wednesday (December 23) to eight years, six months and three weeks in jail after pleading guilty to one count of assault and three drug-related offenses.
The 43-year-old Singaporean was also ordered to take six strokes of the baton.
During the sentencing, nine other charges were considered, mainly for drug-related crimes.
No details about the couple and the school can be released to protect the identities of the two children – a nine-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy.
The court heard that in June 2017, the man grabbed his daughter because he wanted to throw her from the 10th floor of an apartment block.
It was not revealed why he had acted that way.
On July 1 of last year, he went to elementary school with two of his brothers to find their children.
He was already separated from his wife and was in the middle of divorce proceedings at the time.
His daughter told a school counselor that she did not want to meet her father. An assistant principal called the man’s wife around noon to tell her about the situation.
The woman told the school not to allow the man to see her children.
She arrived at the school shortly after to meet her husband in the principal’s office.
The vice principals and the counselor were also present to facilitate the meeting.
Deputy Prosecutor Zhou Yihong said: “During the conversation, the victim mentioned that the defendants had not contributed anything for his children, and mentioned a past incident where the defendant wanted to throw his daughter from the 10th floor.”
“In response, the defendant was agitated. He stood up, staggered towards the victim and … struck the victim on the right side of the head.”
School staff intervened and the woman later went to Woodlands Polyclinic, where it was discovered that she was suffering from a sensitive scalp.
Furthermore, the man admitted to the court that he had used drugs, including methamphetamine, in April and June of this year.
For assault, he could have been jailed for up to two years and fined up to $ 5,000.
For using methamphetamine, he could have been imprisoned for up to 13 years and received up to 12 strokes of the baton.
