Bruno Fernandes admits he mistakenly changed his penalty approach in Manchester United’s 4-1 win against Newcastle.
While the Red Devils star put his team ahead with a brilliant shot in the 86th minute, he had a penalty shot saved in the 58th minute after Karl Darlow made a good save from the bottom left of the goal.
Fernandes had previously made all 10 of his shots from the spot in the Premier League and has received six more penalties than any other player in the competition since his arrival from Sporting earlier this year.
Speaking after the match, Fernandes admitted that he took a new approach to his penalty shot and is ready for rival fans to point out that his point-of-view perfect record no longer exists.
“I change a few times already. Today it doesn’t work,” he said. BBC Match of the Day.
“I want to put the ball more in the corner but it was not good enough. Congratulations to him for being the first to save a penalty in the Premier League for me. There are 11 taken and one missed. Now people can say that I can miss a penalty.
“I need to do what is best for the game, today was not the right choice but it does not matter. I missed the penalty and I have to keep improving in the next games.”
Despite conceding three goals in the closing minutes, Darlow proved decisive for Newcastle as the stopper made several stops in the 90 minutes.
Newcastle manager Steve Bruce felt the final score was not a fair reflection of the game and revealed that Darlow is now under a cloud of injuries after a heavy collision.
“The disappointment is that we were naive towards the end. We had a great opportunity and [David] De Gea makes a wonderful stop. I know Karl has made great saves, but it could have been different, “Bruce said after the game.
“We leave wide open spaces and if you do that it becomes very difficult.
“He [Darlow] received a great blow. We hope it’s not too bad. Until we see the images we will not know what he is like, but he is very sore. “
