SINGAPORE: A 37-year-old man was arrested for his alleged role in a case of breaking and entering and desecrating a statue in a church, police said on Friday (November 20).
The police received a report on November 12 at approximately 10.50 a.m. M. That a statue in a churchyard along Upper Serangoon Road was defaced.
In response to inquiries from the CNA, the police confirmed that the church in question was the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Hougang.
The church said last week a statue of Mary was found defaced in its courtyard.
Through ground investigations and CCTV footage, officers from the Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the man’s identity and arrested him on Wednesday.
The man will be charged in court on Friday with breaking and entering and desecrating a place of worship with the intention of insulting religion of any kind under the Penal Code.
If convicted of burglary, you can be jailed for up to three months, fined up to S $ 1,500, or both. If you are found guilty of desecrating a place of worship with the intent to insult religion, you can be imprisoned for up to five years, fined, or both.
Police will seek a warrant to detain the man at the Institute of Mental Health.
“The police do not condone acts that insult religious harmony in places of worship of any kind in Singapore and the perpetrators will be treated harshly in accordance with the law,” he said.
