Police arrested a 56-year-old man after he beat to death a 67-year-old man after a fight on Sunday (September 13) along Block 6 Beach Road.
Several videos shared on Facebook showed the aftermath of the incident.
In one of them, paramedics from the Singapore Civil Defense Force were seen performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the victim, while a man in black restrained by police officers was not far away.
Speaking with Lianhe Wanbao, an employee at a nearby grocery store said that the entire incident was recorded by his closed-circuit television and that the police took the footage as evidence.
According to the employee, who had seen the images, the perpetrator straddled the old man who had fallen to the ground and hit him repeatedly in the face.
“The scene was really bloody. The crazed man kept beating him, even his hands were covered in blood. He tried to escape afterwards, but the police had already found out about the attack and arrested him on the spot.”
Police told AsiaOne that the victim was taken unconscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and later pronounced dead the same day.
The suspect will be charged in court tomorrow for murder.
In an interview with the Chinese evening newspaper, the victim’s daughter said the family did not recognize the attacker and had no prior record with him, so she did not understand the motive for the attack.
Witnesses told the newspaper that they saw the attacker try to reach into the victim’s pocket and speculated that he may have hit the victim after not robbing him.
The victim’s granddaughter was the first to arrive at the crime scene. Seeing the attacker standing impassively off to the side enraged him even more, he told the newspaper.
“I hope the police can do justice to my grandfather.”
