SINGAPORE – A 36-year-old freelance cameraman was jailed on Monday (November 9) for 17 years with 24 baton strokes for sexually assaulting two underage sisters between 2012 and 2017.
At the time of the crimes, he had a long-standing relationship with the victims’ mother and was referred to as “dad”.
His crimes came to light when the youngest victim could no longer tolerate his behavior and told the school counselors what happened.
Only during the course of police investigations did it become known that he had also assaulted the older victim.
In Superior Court Monday, the guilty pleaded guilty to two counts, each of aggravated sexual assault by penetration and assault aggravated by modesty.
Five other similar charges were considered in the sentence.
The mother of the victims often worked late
The man was between 28 and 33 years old at the time of the events, while the first victim was between 10 and 14 and the second between 8 and 11.
The perpetrator entered into a relationship with the victims’ mother in 2010 and began staying in her one-bedroom apartment. At some point in late 2014 or early 2015, he moved in with her.
As his mother often had to work night shifts, the culprit took care of the victims’ daily needs, such as combing their hair, giving them money, buying things and hugging them.
He started abusing the first victim in 2012 when she was between 10 and 11 years old and slept at night. The abuse lasted for three years, until she was in high school. Although she felt angry and upset, the victim did not know how to stop the culprit, the court heard.
At some point in 2014, he turned his attention to the second victim and also began sexually assaulting her. The abuse lasted until 2017.
The culprit felt in conflict after the assault
On one occasion in 2012, the perpetrator inserted his penis into the older victim’s mouth while he was sleeping.
“After sensing some movement from (her), the defendant quickly withdrew his penis. He knew he was not supposed to do such an act and he went back to sleep with mixed feelings, ”said Assistant District Attorney Rebecca Wong.
A few days later, he placed his hand under the victim’s shorts and rubbed her vagina.
“Later it occurred to the accused that what he was doing was wrong and he withdrew his hand. The accused stayed awake for some time and kept repeating to himself that (the victim) was his daughter and not his lover. The defendant finally fell asleep some time later, ”said DPP Wong.
I played ‘blindfold game’ with an older victim
On another occasion the same year, the victim returned from school and was left alone with the culprit.
He suggested they play a “blindfold game” in which she was supposed to identify different spices that he put in her mouth while she was blindfolded.
The perpetrator began dipping his fingers in seasonings like sugar and salt before inserting his penis into her mouth.
“After withdrawing his penis, the defendant quickly inserted a finger with something spicy into (the victim’s) mouth and asked if he could tell if there was a difference. Since she was scared, she simply replied that she couldn’t and asked for some water to drink. From then on they stopped playing, ”said DPP Wong.
The youngest victim trusted the counselors
At some point in 2015, while the second victim was home alone with the culprit and watching television, he came over to sit next to her, placed his hands under her shirt and grabbed her breasts. At that time he was between 8 and 9 years old.
Shortly after, he told her to sit across from him on the ground and made her hold his penis; but she didn’t want to kiss his penis. “The defendant then told her that if she did not comply, he would make her do worse things,” DPP Wong said.
She obeyed and he made her jerk him off. When she cried, the assailant told her to wash up and not tell anyone what had happened.
In September 2017, the second victim could no longer bear the man’s attacks. One day after he abused her, she told her school counselors what had happened and they reported the matter to authorities.
The mother of the victims was called to the police station and the culprit followed her on suspecting that the matter had something to do with him; he was arrested there.
A child psychiatrist found that the first victim felt angry and wondered why the abuser was abusing her, while the second victim felt scared after the incidents.
The maximum punishment for indecent assault against a person under the age of 14 is up to five years in prison, along with a fine and spanking. The maximum punishment for penetrative sexual assault against a person under the age of 14 is up to 20 years in prison along with a fine and spanking.
