SINGAPORE: Police are investigating a 63-year-old man for allegedly stealing Budget 2020 grocery coupons from his co-tenant and filing a false police report.
The man filed a police report on November 9 alleging that his grocery coupons were missing, along with those of his co-tenant. The alleged robbery occurred at Kim Tian Place, police said.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the man was believed to have received two sets of vouchers in the mailbox at his residence, one for him and his co-tenant,” police said in a press release on Tuesday (November 24).
“Through ground investigations and with the help of images from CCTV cameras, agents from the Central Police Division and the Clementi Police Division established that the man was suspected of having stolen his co-tenant’s vouchers and allegedly lied to his co-tenant that he did not receive any coupons. “
To avoid suspicion on the part of his co-tenant, the man allegedly filed a false police report alleging that his voucher set had also been stolen and misused.
Police investigations are ongoing.
Anyone convicted of theft can be jailed for up to three years, fined, or both. For giving any information that a person knows to be false to a public servant, that person can be imprisoned for up to two years, fined, or both.
The police also reminded the public that police resources can be better used to deal with real crimes and emergencies rather than investigating false reports or false information.
Those who submit false police reports “will face serious consequences under the law,” police said.
In October, the Finance Ministry said grocery vouchers had been mailed to 150,000 Singaporeans to help with household expenses.
