SINGAPORE – A 55-year-old man appeared in district court on Tuesday (September 15) for allegedly killing another man on Beach Road on Sunday.
Chng Hock Choon was charged with one count of murder.
The Singaporean allegedly killed Mr. Miskiman Maakip in a patch of grass near Block 5 Beach Road at around 3pm that day.
Police said in a statement Monday that they were alerted to the incident around 3 p.m. Sunday.
Officers who arrived shortly after found Mr. Miskiman, 67, immobile at the scene.
He was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and pronounced dead the same day.
The victim’s granddaughter, 22-year-old preschool teacher Emillia Marlinda, had previously told The New Paper that she ran to her apartment after seeing someone collapsed on a nearby patch of grass.
His father later recognized the man as his grandfather and the couple ran downstairs.
Ms. Emillia told TNP: “(My family) cried when we saw it; we couldn’t bear it.”
She added that her grandfather had lived with her and four other family members in the area for about 10 years.
She said: “He was a carefree man and he liked wandering the stairs … We are still trying to come to terms with his death.”
A witness, who was not identified, told the Chinese-language Shin Min Daily News that he saw a man throw blows at another man on Sunday.
The witness said: “He was hitting the man’s head and body, and after the man fell to the ground, he stopped moving.
Another witness, a 63-year-old cleaner, who was also not named in previous news reports, said it was happening when he saw a man kneeling on the grass muttering to himself.
The cleaner decided to take a closer look and was surprised to see another man lying on the floor.
Chng, who appeared via a video link from the Central Police Division, told the court on Tuesday: “That person stole my money.”
He did not elaborate on who he was referring to.
Chang will be on remand for psychiatric observation at the Changi Prison Complex Medical Center and will return to court on October 6.
Criminals convicted of murder will face the death penalty.
