SINGAPORE – A man fell into a well about 1.5 m deep outside a coffee shop in Yishun on Sunday (December 27) after stepping on a metal cap that gave way.

Colin Pereira, 57, injured a muscle in his back and suffered cuts to his right knee as a result of the fall near Block 732 Yishun Avenue 5, the Chinese-language newspaper Lianhe Zaobao reported on Wednesday.

The well was a grease trap, which captures oil from cafeteria wastewater.

Responding to inquiries from The Straits Times, Pauline Kwa, a spokesperson for the Nee Soon City Council, said a team was dispatched to cordon off the area immediately after the city council was alerted to the incident.

“(The grease trap) is under maintenance from the cafeteria owner … The city council is in contact with the cafeteria to expedite repair work and (has) alerted the Housing and Development Board,” Ms. Kwa.

He added that the city council will send a letter to all cafeterias in the city of Nee Soon to remind them to carry out regular checks and maintain the lids on the grease traps.

Pereira, a part-time deliveryman, told Zaobao that two birdcages he was holding were damaged in the fall.

Bystanders came to his aid, helped him out of the well and called an ambulance.

After paramedics came and bandaged his knee, Pereira said he did not want to be taken to the hospital. But the pain got worse and he went to the hospital later that day, he told Zaobao. They gave him a week of medical leave.

Pereira said he spent $ 600 on medical treatment.
