SINGAPORE – A 28-year-old man was sentenced to four weeks in prison on Friday (October 23) for attempting to bribe a police officer to prevent the application of the Covid-19 law.
People convicted of a corruption offense, such as bribery, can face a fine of up to $ 100,000 and a prison term of up to five years.
The Chinese national was seen on May 7 by a patrol team from the Public Transportation Security Command with his mask down near the smoky corner of the Boon Lay MRT station.
The four policemen approached Chen Long and instructed him to use his mask correctly.
He complied, but was seen shortly after by the same patrol team with his mask lowered to expose his nose.
Chen, who has a work permit in Singapore, was taken to a room at the MRT station to be interviewed.
During the interview, Chen showed the money in his wallet to the police officer Chan Hui Shi and offered him $ 50 to let him go.
The officer rejected his offer and Chen received a $ 300 composition for a crime under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act.
The incident was subsequently reported to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Office (CPIB).
Anyone caught not wearing a mask outside the home faces a fine of $ 300 for the first offense and $ 1,000 for a second offense.
Anyone caught trying to bribe their way out of Covid-19 related crimes will face additional punishment under the law.
