SINGAPORE: A 33-year-old man was arrested for allegedly extorting some S $ 200,000 from a woman so that compromising videos of herself would not circulate. He also allegedly forced her to engage in sexual acts with him.
In a press release on Saturday (January 30), police said that on October 10 of last year around 10 p.m., they received a report from a woman saying she was extorted by a man who had been taken friend online in a dating app.
She said the man had asked her to send him compromising videos of herself before they met, and that she had requested to meet in Malaysia.
“While the victim was in Malaysia, the man sent a driver to pick her up and allegedly threatened to engage in sexual acts with the driver so her compromising videos would not circulate. The victim gave in to the lawsuit,” SPF said. .
After returning to Singapore, the victim continued to receive threats from the man, who demanded that he transfer money to prevent the videos from being leaked.
Between February and October 2020, the victim transferred around S $ 200,000 to a bank account provided by the man.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the man who befriended the woman online is believed to be the driver the man sent to pick up the victim,” police said.
With the help of the Royal Malaysian Police, the man was arrested on Thursday.
“The man is also believed to be involved in similar reported cases involving other female victims,” SPF said, adding that investigations are ongoing.
He will be charged in court on Saturday. If convicted of extortion, he can be imprisoned for between two and seven years and flogged.
