SINGAPORE: A man and a woman were charged in court on Friday (October 16) with stealing Budget 2020 grocery vouchers from a residential block in Tampines.

Miqhael Wahyudean Abdullah, 24, and Irwani Nur Amira Azami, 23, were charged with robbery with common intent.

They are the first to be charged in a series of arrests made by police for grocery vouchers stolen from mailboxes across Singapore. The grocery vouchers had been mailed to Singaporeans to help with household expenses as part of this year’s budget.

Miqhael and Irwani are accused of stealing the coupons from Block 872A, Tampines Street 86, between 8 p.m. on October 6 and 3:30 a.m. on October 7.

They were arrested on October 14.

At least three other men and two women have also been arrested for allegedly stealing Budget 2020 grocery vouchers from HDB mailboxes in different locations in Singapore.

Investigations revealed that the cases were likely unrelated and opportunistic in nature, police said.

“The police have also received similar reports in other developments and we are intensifying our efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” a police statement said Thursday.

“If you see suspicious people loitering near mailboxes, call the police at 999 immediately.”

The accused couple will return to court on November 6. If convicted of robbery with common intent, they could be jailed for up to three years, fined, or both.
