[UPDATE Oct 8] Police arrested an 18-year-old man for a knife attack outside the NTUC Fairprice at the Boon Lay Mall.
In a press release today, police said the suspect was identified and arrested on the same day as the incident.
Prosecutors and police are requesting a court order for the man to be sent to the Institute of Mental Health for a psychiatric evaluation.
He will be indicted in court on October 9 for willfully causing serious harm with a dangerous weapon.
If convicted, he can face life in prison or a prison term of up to 15 years, and will also be punished by whipping or, if not sentenced to life, a fine.
A shopper at the supermarket told Stomp: “Two men were fighting and later one of them was seen returning with a helicopter. He yelled at Hokkien and suddenly started attacking the other man.
“Everyone fled and the attacker fled, while the wounded man lay on the ground.”
Then FairPrice staff approached the victim and helped stop the bleeding by applying pressure to his head.
A 23-year-old man was injured in an attack in front of NTUC FairPrice in the Boon Lay Mall this afternoon (October 7).
Police told AsiaOne that a man had attacked the victim with a knife, injuring her face and head.
Investigations are under way into a case of willfully causing serious harm with a dangerous weapon.
Shortly after the attack, a Facebook user shared photos of the area outside the supermarket cordoned off with police tape.
Paramedics were also seen tending to the victim’s injuries while he was sitting on the floor near the entrance to the point of sale, in clips posted by another Facebook user.
His head seemed to be bleeding profusely.
The Singapore Civil Defense Force told AsiaOne that they received a call for assistance at 12:40 pm Paramedics took the victim to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.
Responding to AsiaOne’s inquiries, a FairPrice spokesperson said: “Our staff provided immediate assistance and ensured that the safety of our shoppers was not compromised. Our store operations were not affected.”
