TUARAN, SABAH – Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced the formation of an opposition alliance in Sabah to challenge the current Warisan Plus government in state elections, which begin on Saturday (September 12) with nominations.
The alliance, called Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, comprises the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition of Tan Sri Muhyiddin, Barisan Nasional and Parti Bersatu Sabah.
Muhyiddin said the parties agreed on Friday that only by forming an alliance would they be strong enough to take on the Warisan Plus government led by Sabah’s current Chief Minister Shafie Apdal.
He made the announcement when he appeared in Tuaran on Saturday morning to show his support for Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s head of state, Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor, who is defending Sulaman’s state seat there.
“Yesterday, we all sat together in a meeting and reached a consensus to name our pact Gabungan Rakyat Sabah,” Muhyiddin was quoted as saying by The Star newspaper.
“The purpose for all parties to come together and compete in all 73 seats is none other than to replace Warisan Plus as the next state government,” he added.
“No party can do this alone and win. Only Gabungan Rakyat Sabah together can build a strong and stable government.”
Muhyiddin also hinted that if Gabungan Rakyat forms the state government, Hajiji is a possible prime minister.
Candidates for the 73 state seats in Sabah will present their nominations on Saturday, and the day of the elections will be set on September 26.
Muhyiddin, supported by a wave of approval over Kuala Lumpur’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak, has been forced to conduct an early test of the cohesion of his fledgling ruling pact after Datuk Seri Shafie convinced the governor of Sabah, a chief of ceremonial state, of dissolving. the legislature when defectors deprived their Parti Warisan Sabah-led coalition of a majority in July.
Shafie has been nominated as a candidate for the post of prime minister by most opposition parties, except Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), which insists its president Anwar Ibrahim must rise to the highest office.
If Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia and Muhyiddin’s PN fail to deliver in Sabah, they may lack the clout to secure enough seats for their party in the general elections.
The Warisan Plus campaign led by Shafie included the Democratic Action Party and Parti Amanah Negara, components of the PH coalition led by Anwar, as well as the local United Progressive Kinabalu Organization party.
Former Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman, who had earlier launched a legal offer to stop the dissolution of the state assembly and declared himself the rightful Chief Minister, was reported to have been absent from the Sungai Sibuga nomination center. , where you were expected to submit your Nomination Form.
