Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Calls for Special Face-to-Face Cabinet Meeting on Friday: Report, Southeast Asia News and Highlights

KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR / ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is expected to chair a special meeting of his cabinet at his office in Putrajaya on Friday morning (October 23), sources say.

The special meeting will follow a call on Wednesday by Umno President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for a political ceasefire after the party threatened to withdraw from the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government led by Muhyiddin a week earlier.

The cabinet meeting will be held at 9.30 a.m., and the attending ministers will be required to undergo tests with the Rapid Test Kit Antigen (RTK-Ag) method before being cleared to attend, sources familiar with the matter said with The Star.

“It will be a face-to-face meeting,” the source said briefly.

Sources attached to various ministries also confirmed that the meeting is scheduled for Friday, but remained tight-lipped on the meeting agenda.

However, other government sources have indicated that they are not aware of the meeting taking place.

Cabinet meetings are generally held on Wednesdays and only on Fridays if Parliament is in session.

Zahid said Wednesday that Umno, who has the largest number of MPs in PN, will support the government’s initiative to help the people and the country cope with the Covid-19 pandemic and economic uncertainties.

This is a U-turn from last week, when Umno said he was considering withdrawing support for the PN and wanted “new terms” to remain in the 12-party ruling coalition.

The political twists and turns followed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s hearing with the Malaysian king on October 13, where he claimed to have “formidable” support from federal lawmakers to form a new government.
