KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR / ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – Police are separately investigating two Malaysian politicians for allegedly insulting Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and the Malaysian King.
Former Umno supreme council member Lokman Noor Adam has been detained for a day in connection with a video that allegedly insulted the prime minister.
Meanwhile, a former Pakatan Harapan government cabinet minister, Mujahid Yusof Rawa, is under investigation for allegedly insulting Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah in connection with the March appointment of Tan Sri Muhyiddin as prime minister.
The investigations are occurring amid a new wave of turmoil in Malaysian politics involving both Prime Minister Muhyiddin and the king.
The director of the Federal Department of Criminal Investigation (CID), Commissioner Huzir Mohamed, said that Datuk Lokman was detained by the CID’s Special Investigation Unit at around 11 p.m. Sunday (November 1) after a report against him.
“We began an investigation into a video posted on his Facebook page on Sunday,” Datuk Huzir said in a statement on Monday (November 2). “The video allegedly contained elements of criminal intimidation and profanity was used against the prime minister’s leadership.”
Police confiscated an electronic device used by the suspect to upload the viral video, he said.
Mr. Lokman is a strong supporter of former Prime Minister Najib Razak and was director of communication in the Ministry of Finance when Najib was Minister of Finance.
Commissioner Huzir said the investigation is classified under a section of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation and a section of the Communication and Multimedia Law for improper use of network facilities, he added.
“We are also investigating under Section 14 of the Misdemeanor Act of 1955 for using foul language.”
He said the investigation is being conducted fairly and professionally without being pressured by either party.
“We urge all parties to give us space and time to complete the investigation. Stern measures will be taken against those who endanger public order and security,” he said.
News reports say Lokman was detained while conducting a Facebook live session at a restaurant near the Putra World Trade Center on Sunday.
In the investigation into the opposition MP Mujahid, he said that the police called him to come to their headquarters at 5.30pm on Monday to give a statement.
Mr. Mujahid is Vice President of Parti Amanah Negara and was a de facto Minister of Religious Affairs.
Mujahid tweeted on Monday that he would cooperate with the federal CID’s Special Investigation Unit.
When contacted, the federal deputy director of the CID, Mior Faridalathrash Wahid, confirmed that Mr. Mujahid had been called in to assist in an investigation. He said the investigation began in March.
He said police are conducting an investigation under a section of the Sedition Act and a section of the Communication and Multimedia Act. No details were given.
Mujahid’s investigation is linked to his comments on the appointment of Prime Minister Muhyiddin on March 1 as prime minister by Sultan Abdullah, The Malaysian Insight said online.
