KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar, suffered minor injuries after his bicycle hit a pothole, causing him to fall in Banting, Selangor state, on Sunday morning. tomorrow (December 27).
He tweeted images of his bruised face and the culprit: a pothole on the side of the road near a ditch.
“Bump, ditch, KJ. 2020 keeps on giving,” tweeted Khairy, who is also the newly elected president of the Negeri Sembilan State Cycling Association.
His tweet prompted the Kuala Langat District Department of Public Works, which is in charge of roads in Banting, to apologize to him.
“Kuala Langat JKR apologizes for the incident that happened to the minister, will take immediate action on the matter and pray for the speedy recovery of YB,” he said.
In response to the apology, a youth leader from Parti Keadilan Rakyat in Selangor said the department should also apologize to other road users.
“There are many potholes under your watch and was the intention to apologize only after a minister involved an accident?” Kuala Langat Youth PKR chief Mohd Shah Rezza Mohd Tuniman said in a statement, cited by Malaysiakini news site.
In response to Khairy’s post, several Twitter users urged the minister to do something about the poor road conditions in Malaysia, including in his home state of Negeri Sembilan.
“Many holes along the roads everywhere YB, even in Nilai. It is necessary to urge the (Municipal) Councils of each district to see and act thoroughly on this matter so that accidents or things like that do not happen”, wrote the Twitter user.
Some shared images of their injuries in similar accidents, but most only wished Mr. Khairy a speedy recovery.
The minister’s assistant, Raja Syahrir Abu Bakar, later tweeted that the minister suffered only scrapes and bruises.
“Thank you all for reaching out. @Khairykj is fine. A little bruised, but all is well.”
