SINGAPORE: A foreign domestic worker robbed her employer’s family for several months, including the “breaker” period when they went out for night walks.
When asked on Friday (September 11) if she admitted to the acts, Indonesian Rina Tilaar, 46, sobbed and said she did not do some of them, claiming that her employer treated her “like (a) an animal.”
She was sentenced to four weeks in jail after withdrawing her claims qualifying her guilty plea. The term was retroactive to August 28, when it was sent.
Rina pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery as a maid and one count of robbery. A fourth charge was considered.
The court heard that Rina began working for her employer of 39 years and her family in late January this year. At the beginning of her employment, she signed a declaration form indicating that she had cash of S $ 17.70 and 200 Indonesian rupees (S $ 0.02).
His monthly salary was remitted by his employer directly to his bank account in Indonesia, state prosecutor Nasri Haron said.
Between February and May, Rina stole cash and items from her employer’s family. Her employer’s mother noted that cash in various amounts was missing from her wallet in her bedroom, while her S $ 150 worth of Braun Buffel purse was also missing.
In March, his employer’s wife placed a cardholder with S $ 52 cash and an EZ-Link card on a table in the living room, and the items later disappeared.
The wife also said that cash totaling S $ 200 was missing from her wallet in her room four times in April.
After this, he started counting the money he put in his wallet and discovered that two S $ 10 bills were missing on May 19.
Rina’s employer also noted that a total of S $ 300 had disappeared from her wallet between mid-April and May.
On May 21, while Rina was out for a walk with her mother, the employer and his wife searched Rina’s belongings. They found S $ 1,203.95 cash in a bag of Braun Buffel coins.
As the amount was higher than what Rina had initially stated at the beginning of her employment, her employer called the police.
Rina admitted receiving cash of around S $ 1,000 from the family, along with a bag of Braun Buffel coins belonging to her employer’s mother and the cardholder and EZ-Link card from her wife. employer.

Rina cried throughout the hearing, which she attended via video link from her place of detention. She said that she did not use the money and that she had taken it as her employer, treating her “like (a) an animal.”
“He throws porridge in my hand and (pushes me) with the toothpick,” he sobbed. “I never use this money. My employer lies to me. She hurts me, I never complain to the police or to MOM (Ministry of Manpower). But I just shut up because I want to work.”
He added that if he had wanted to steal money, he would have already run away with him. She said in Bahasa Indonesian that she worked in a four-story house and was a single mother with three children, and her father has died.
The judge told her that she had to reject her statement because she did not admit the facts, but Rina annulled her claims and asked for mercy.
The prosecutor asked for at least six weeks in jail. Sobbing, Rina said that she promised she would not repeat her “nonsense” and that she wanted to work for her family.
“I am very sorry to the court, to my employers and to my agencies and also to your Honor,” he said.
District Judge Ong Hian Sun said he noted that “substantially the amounts of money were recovered” and gave Rina four weeks in jail.
For theft by a servant, she could have been imprisoned for up to seven years and fined.
