PETALING JAYA – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says he resigned as president of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) in February, as the party rejected him and made a decision that went against his advice.
The former prime minister said he was against a decision to leave Pakatan Harapan, as there was no basis for doing so, as he had the support of the coalition that won the fourteenth general election in May 2018.
“This meant that the party had lost faith in me and, in that situation, I could not remain as president of Bersatu. This was due to the actions of my party,” he said in a video message posted on his social media pages. . Monday, May 11
Dr. Mahathir said that at a meeting on February 21, Pakatan Harapan had given him complete discretion on when to resign as prime minister.
“I told (Tan Sri) Muhyiddin (Yassin) that there is no reason to leave Pakatan Harapan, as I have their full support.
“We should wait and see if there is any reason to leave, but he was of the opinion that we had to leave Pakatan that day because DAP would destroy the Malays.”
“I didn’t think DAP could easily destroy the Malays. So I told him to wait, to give him a little time,” he said.
He announced his resignation as Prime Minister and President of Bersatu on February 24.
According to Dr. Mahathir, he told Muhyiddin to think correctly about leaving Pakatan, since it was with his support that the elections were won.
“It was not appropriate to leave them and work with the parties that lost the elections, the parties involved in corruption and the theft of money.”
“We reject our own party and work with the party that lost. The party that was led by (Datuk Sri) Najib (Razak) would be the government,” he said.
He said that because his advice was rejected, he made the decision to resign from his positions as president of Bersatu and Pakatan, although many people came to him and asked him to reconsider his decision.
“I came back as president of Bersatu, but not as president of Pakatan Harapan because we had left the coalition and they fell because of our decision,” he said.
Recently, the Bersatu Chief of Information, Mohd Radzi Md Jidin, stated that Dr. Mahathir was aware and supported the decision to leave Pakatan.
He said that the Bersatu Supreme Council had decided to leave Pakatan and form a new political alliance with other parties.
Radzi said the decision was not made in a hurry. In fact, it was decided at various levels of party leadership several months earlier and ended at the Bersatu political bureau meeting on February 21.
He also said at a special Supreme Council meeting on February 24 that Dr. Mahathir’s resignation was not accepted, but after verifying the party’s constitution, they discovered that there was no assignment that would allow the Supreme Council to return the position of president to the person who resigned.
