SINGAPORE: M1’s fiber broadband internet service was facing outages on Tuesday morning (May 12), the telecommunications company said in a Facebook post just before 8 am.

Customers “in the western, central and eastern parts of Singapore” may be affected, M1 said, adding that its engineers were “working hard to resolve the problem.”

Some online commenters said the outage was frustrating as they had to work from home during the current COVID-19 “circuit breaker” period.

“Please work fast as I need to (make) calls later. I can’t even call the customer service line,” Facebook user Ru Yan’s said.

Commenters reported experiencing an outage in various areas of the island, including Ang Mo Kio, Bishan, Boon Keng, Bukit Panjang, Eunos, Hougang, Jurong, Marine Parade, Punggol, Sembawang, Sengkang, Serangoon, Siglap, Tampines, Toa Payoh , Tiong Bahru, Queenstown and Yishun

Online service tracker Downdetector showed that users began reporting the M1 service outage as of early Tuesday morning.

“We apologize for the inconvenience and will provide updates as soon as possible,” said M1.

In an update at 11.05am, he said the outages were affecting “only a specific group of customers.”

“Most of our clients can connect to our fiber broadband,” added M1.

On April 15, StarHub users experienced a one-hour internet outage that left customers furious.

Subsequently, the telecommunications company apologized to its customers and offered them a one-time discount on their monthly home broadband rate.

Communications and Information Minister S Iswaran said last week that authorities would work with telecoms companies to increase the buffer on their network capacity. He made the comment in response to a question from Member of Parliament Liang Eng Hwa about the increase in Internet traffic during the switch period.

CNA has contacted M1 for more details on the outage.
