Rest in power, Longcat, who lived a long life as one of the most resilient cats known on the internet.
As one of the famous OG felines on the internet in the early days of meme culture, Nobiko came into our lives through a simple photo uploaded to the Japanese 2chan image board sometime between 2004 and 2005.
Its Japanese owner posted the image of the white cat in all its extended glory before the image was transplanted to 4chan, during the days when the forum was still known as a breeding ground for memes (instead of alt-right hell what is now ).
Nobiko’s impressive span sparked a whole series of Photoshopped memes and built a mythology as it became known forever as Longcat. It destroyed cities, spread through Twitter threads, spread through computer monitors, and soared into the cosmos.
The prevailing fictional myth around Longcat is that he would one day collide with his nemesis Tacgnol, another long but black cat. The final battle would unleash Catnarok, as legend has it.
Unfortunately, Catnarok would not come into existence. The Hong Kong news portal Stand News reported that Nobiko was in poor health and was taken to hospital on September 20 before passing away shortly thereafter. Her owner tweeted that Nobiko was around 18½ years old, a long life for a cat, before she died.

While Longcat is really long, CNET reported that it was 65 centimeters from head to toe.
On social media, people have been paying tribute to Longcat, who is now joining other LOLcats Grumpy Cat and Lil Bub across the rainbow bridge. Long live Longcat.
