Liverpool boss Klopp receives BBC award and points to shameless dig at Man Utd

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp blatantly took aim at Manchester United after his team was crowned Team of the Year at the BBC’s Sports Personality ceremony on Sunday night.

Klopp, who was named FIFA Coach of the Year last week, also collected the Coach of the Year award in addition to his team’s award.

While skipper Jordan Henderson finished second in the biggest prize of the night, which was predictably won by Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Liverpool’s victory, which ended a 30-year wait for the top flight title, was emphatically done. They managed to finish 18 points ahead of their closest rival and recorded the first title win in the competition’s history by securing it with seven games to play.

It was Liverpool’s 19th top division title and the first since 1989-90.

And the German had the honor of taking the award in Salford, before pointing a mockery at United.

“When the coach of the Team of the Year became the Coach of the Year, he obviously had an outstanding team on the field.

“Hendo almost mentions them all, but my coaching staff is obviously the main reason why all things worked the way they do, so I’m very happy.

“Usually you win an award as a soccer coach, this time obviously all of my contenders were from different types of sports and I’ve never won anything like this before. It’s really nice.

“On behalf of my coaches, I obviously accept it and take it home to Liverpool. Thanks a lot.

‘Amazing work’

“My team deserves it, because they did an incredible job,” said the German, who took over at Anfield in 2015 with Liverpool 10th in the Premier League.

“It is a mixture of talent, character, desire and the power of the club, which is very important.

“All of that comes together and it was a great moment when we became champions.

“We want to organize a big party when it is allowed again, it could take a little longer but until then maybe we can win something more, we’ll see.

“We can’t wait to see the fans again and winning this award in Manchester is even sweeter.”
