REUTERS: Lenovo Group said Tuesday that it has launched a new server platform capable of handling heavy computing tasks within data centers using chips from Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

Demand from cloud computing companies has boosted server chip sales, helping overall results for AMD and rival Intel Corp.

Lenovo, the world’s largest maker of personal computers, is also a major maker of servers that are located within data centers and power online services such as gaming and video streaming.

Intel’s Xeon chips have dominated the server chip market, but AMD has been gaining ground since its reentry into business three years ago with rival EPYC processors that garnered positive reviews.

Lenovo said Tuesday that the newer server design would accommodate two AMD processor chips within a single server, making the machines capable of handling more workload. Previously, Lenovo had only offered servers with an AMD chip.
