SINGAPORE: Lawyer M Ravi is being investigated for criminal defamation in connection with a Facebook post alleging that he was told by lawyer Eugene Thuraisingam that Law Minister K Shanmugam has said that he “exercises influence over the President of the Court Supreme, “police said Saturday (Nov. 7).

“The Public Ministry has issued an order in accordance with article 16 (2) of the Code of Criminal Procedure for the police to investigate the crime,” they said in a press release.

Ravi’s Facebook post on November 6 alleged that Thuraisingam had told him that Shanmugam had said that he “exercises influence over the Chief Justice” and “commands and controls (sic) Sundaresh Menon.”

Thuraisingam wrote a letter to Minister Shanmugam on the same day that Ravi’s Facebook post was posted saying that “[t]there is absolutely no truth here “in the allegations, police said.

Thuraisingam also posted a copy of the letter on his Facebook page, referring to Ravi’s post as “false and completely false.”

According to Thuraisingam, Ravi had made similar allegations in a Facebook post published on June 12, 2017.

Thuraisingam then clarified with Shanmugam on June 13, 2017 that Ravi’s accusations were false. No police action was taken in that incident.
